I'm also very glad I read the anthology, even though one of the stories in The Dying Earth was spoiled a bit by it (actually, the title alone spoiled the story, but not bad at all). But we most likely didn't start recognising the genre as such until a certain Jack Vance (influenced by Smith) wrote his Tales of the Dying Earth. Martin and Gardner Duzois (Ed). Trees fruited with many intoxications overhung his path, and flowers bowed obsequiously as he passed. I was prompted to read this by Subterranean Press's announcement of a collection of short stories set in the same world, a project which has some great writers contributing. He has been celebrated in the SF and Fantasy (and to a lesser extent, Mystery) fields for years. I bought books #1, #2 and #4, and then I searched for an eBook of “Tales of the Dying Earth”. Finally we had a name for this thing. Songs of the Dying Earth: Stories in Honor of Jack Vance Jack Vance is now 93 years old, and has retired from writing. Here is a quotation from Tales of the Dying Earth, by Vance: Deep in thought, Mazirian the Magician walked his garden. Jack Vance wrote the Tales of the Dying Earth series over a period of 34 years from 1950-1984.
